ADVISING

Look at this step by step guide to advising. Please contact us with questions.

As you prepare for advising each semester, it may also be helpful to remember the following requirements and procedures:

  • You must be enrolled in at least 12 semester hours to be considered a full-time student. On average, students enroll in 15-17 semester hours each semester to stay on track to graduate in 4 years.
  • Students are not permitted to take more than 18 semester hours each fall or spring semester without first receiving approval from their academic advisor. To inquire about taking more than 18 semester hours in a fall or spring semester, please email or meet with your advisor.
  • To register for classes or to make changes to your schedule, you will need your UNCG Advising Code. Remember, this code is unique to you (no other student has the same code), and your code changes each semester. You will receive your advising code during pre-registration advising – once received, we recommend saving it so you have it as needed!
  • Classes that require “Written Permission Only” can only be added to your course schedule by the instructor. Please contact the course instructor for permission to add the course.
  • Adding or changing a major or minor is completed online via the UNCG Curriculum Change Form. Please contact your advisor if you have questions about adding or changing a major or minor.
  • Remember that it is YOUR responsibility to make sure you are in academic good standing at all times. For assistance in calculating your semester or cumulative GPA, use the GPA Calculator
  • Be aware of the University’s academic deadlines, particularly those pertaining to the last day to withdraw from a course without academic penalty. Before dropping a class, visit the University Calendar or talk with your academic advisor to make sure you are aware of potential consequences of dropping a class. Once you are ready to withdraw from a course, you can do so by logging in to UNCGenie.

All undergraduate students are assigned an advisor. To find your advisor, log into UNCGenie, select Student Main Menu, and view your Student Profile – your advisor will be listed. You can also view your advisor on DegreeWorks. If you do not have an assigned advisor, please contact your academic department.

The UNCGenie information system is the means by which students register and complete many other transactions at UNCG. UNCGenie is Web-based. See Registration Instructions for complete user instructions.

Degree Works is the degree evaluation system used for students who declared their majors beginning Fall 2014 or later. These instruction guides are helpful tools for navigating degree evaluations and creating what-if analyses (PDF).

Are you wondering what your class options are? When or where a class meets? Who is the instructor?

Getting started:

  1. Click the UNCGenie link from the UNCG home page. Do not log in.
  1. Scroll down to Quick Links and select Class Schedule

Searching for classes:

  1. Select the appropriate term
  1. Select a Subject and/or a General Education Attribute (MAC category)
  1. Click Search.

Helpful hints for understanding your search results:

  • Click on the hyperlinked course title for additional information – prerequisites, corequisites, course description, restrictions, etc.
  • The Meeting Times column indicates the time, day, and location of class meetings (unless the course is asynchronous online) as well as the first and last day of the class. In spring semester, this will help you identify Winter Term classes; in summer sessions, this will help you identify whether a class meets during session 1 or session 2. It will also help you identify classes that only meet for the first or second half of the semester. The Campus column will help you identify whether the course is in-person or online.
  • The Attribute column indicates the MAC requirement that a class fulfills.
  • The Status column indicates whether there are open seats in a course. A course that has a red exclamation point in the Status column is full with no available seats.

Please review How to Register for Courses

Additionally, this is a helpful registration step-by-step video tutorial: How to use Schedule Hero at UNCG – YouTube

To find your registration window, log into UNCGenie, select Student Main Menu, and view your Student Profile. Click on Registration Notices in the top right corner – your registration window will be listed in the drop-down box.

If a course you need is closed, you may email the instructor to ask if they are willing to let you enroll. Professors may allow extra students even if a class is full. However, you may need to plan to take the class in a future semester.

If a course requires a prerequisite that you believe you have met with previous credit, please contact your advisor for support. If you have not taken the prerequisite, you will need to complete the prerequisite course in order to take the desired course in a future semester.

The Graduation Plan helps you track academic progress and plan for degree completion, whether for a Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) appeal or future semesters. Your advisor can assist with your plan.

Course overloads must be requested by your advisor and approved by the University Registrar’s Office. Please contact your advisor for assistance with course overload requests.

At UNCG, all students must complete courses in the University Minerva’s Academic Curriculum program, more commonly referred to as MAC. MAC requirements help students develop 11 essential competencies, fostering transferable skills for academics, career, and personal growth, while encouraging curiosity and broad knowledge acquisition. Understanding MAC Learning Outcomes and finding appropriate classes will help you fulfill these requirements based on your personal and academic interests.

Students should consult the University Registrar’s Office to determine if their Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate Program scores meet requirements for college credits.

UNCG typically accepts only courses with grades of C or higher. Students can transfer unlimited credits from an approved 4-year institution, but only 64 credits from an approved 2-year institution. Only the credits transfer; grades (or GPA) do not. Refer to this link for transfer courses to UNCG from other institutions.

See UNCG’s “Transfer Credit” page for more detail.

As a student at UNCG, it is critically important that you understand the University’s Academic Standing policy and that you are aware of your own academic standing at all times. See Academic Standing Overview. Students must be in Academic Good Standing to graduate from UNCG.

One of your responsibilities as a UNCG student is to have a general awareness and understanding of Academic Policies and Procedures at the University. Not only can these serve as resources for you throughout your undergraduate career, but they can also be useful in guiding your decision-making when selecting classes or developing your long-term academic plan.

There are many policies outlined in the UNCG Academic Bulletin, but some of the most necessary policies are outlined here. When you are ready, contact the HHS Advising and Personal Development Center (askhhs@uncg.edu.). In this meeting, you can discuss the UNCG policies and your individual circumstances in more detail so that you can make an informed decision about your academic success.
