    HDFS alum, award winner, passes away 

    UNCG alum Dr. Jay A. Mancini passed away on Oct. 10, 2024. Mancini, 75, was a lifelong friend of the University and the School of Health and Human Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. from UNCG in 1977 in Child Development and Family Relations (HDFS).

    HHS Remembers Trailblazer Jo Safrit

    In addition to funding kinesiology at UNCG, Safrit also invested in numerous other areas. She also provided support to the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the UNCG Alumni Association Fund, the Spartan Athletics Scholarship Fund, and UNCG as a whole.

    The Class of 1958/Gail Hennis Scholarship Fund, established in 1996, and the Rosemary McGee Scholarship Endowment, established in 1999. Bobbi’s lifetime and estate giving to these scholarship funds exceeds $2.25 million.

    Penny Family Fund Supports Faculty Research

    Faculty at UNCG’s School of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) will receive additional support for research thanks to a planned gift from Judy Penny ’70, ’74 MA, ’89 PhD. The gift will establish the Penny Family Faculty First Endowment and advance HHS faculty research.

    Melinda Hamrick ’69

    Hamrick did so by establishing a charitable gift annuity with her alma mater. The Melinda Hamrick ’69 Graduate Award in the Joint Master’s Degree in Social Work Program will support graduate students accepted into UNCG’s and NC A&T’s Joint Master in Social Work Program who hope to pursue careers in public social services.
