uring the two weeks the students were on the trip, they shadowed clinicians at medical centers, toured a public and private hospital, worked alongside doctors doing medical outreach, promoted education awareness and dental hygiene for children, and learned about Jamaican culture.
For one week of the summer, about a dozen kids gather on the outskirts of Greensboro at Piney Lake. They canoe. They swim. They jump on a giant water trampoline. They act in plays and do yoga and crafts and explore nature. And they talk about their stutter and learning to accept it.
“How would you like your mom or dad or your grandma or grandpa to be treated?”
That question summarizes the ideology of Hope Niedrich, who just defended her capstone project before the faculty in UNC Greensboro’s gerontology program.

In addition to funding kinesiology at UNCG, Safrit also invested in numerous other areas. She also provided support to the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the UNCG Alumni Association Fund, the Spartan Athletics Scholarship Fund, and UNCG as a whole.
The Martineks’ generous gift will ensure that Project Effort and the Youth Leader Corps continue to teach life lessons to children, youth, and UNCG students for
decades to come.
The Helen Canaday Scholarship supports undergraduate students pursuing careers in human development and family studies. Thus far, 21 students have received it. In 2015, Charles and Lois Lee named the Helen Canaday Scholarship as a beneficiary in their will, and in 2018, they established a charitable gift annuity to provide additional support.
