Lifetime Legacy Award: Dr. Kathleen (Kathy) Williams
Dr. Kathleen “Kathy” Williams is this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Legacy Award. This is reserved for an alumnus who has served as a pioneer in his/her field of study and has tirelessly given of their treasure through time or talents over many decades. This honoree may be selected from among the alumni of any of the 10 departments and programs in the school. Dr. Williams is receiving this award 50 years after receiving her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from UNCG.
After earning her graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Williams worked at the University of Oklahoma and Kansas State University before returning to UNCG in 1988 as an associate professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. Prior to moving into administrative roles at UNCG, she taught and advised kinesiology undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Williams also developed a research program in the areas of motor development for older adults that included balance, mobility, gait, self-confidence, fall prevention, and coordination. Her work also focused on physical education with an emphasis on teaching and developmentally appropriate instruction. Dr. Williams received regular funding for her scholarly work. She has held numerous fellowship appointments and roles on various professional committees and advisory boards.
In 1999, Dr. Williams was promoted to professor. She has served in many leadership roles across a variety of departments during her tenure at UNCG – including stints as interim department head for the departments of Dance and Leisure Studies. In 2000, she became department head for Exercise and Sport Science, and in 2007, associate dean for academic programs. She was an integral player in forming what is now the School of Health and Human Sciences.
Beyond her work with students, faculty, and administrative leadership, Dr. Williams established several scholarships and initiated the undergraduate teaching assistant fund. She made substantial strides in undergraduate student success initiatives and advocating for teaching faculty. Dr. Williams was known for handling difficult situations with grace, kindness, and a welcome dose of sarcasm. She is a wealth of knowledge of all things UNCG and Kinesiology.
Dr. Williams dedicated 33 years to UNC Greensboro as an alumna, beloved professor, colleague, administrator, advisor, and friend. She remains involved at UNCG, including serving as a docent at the Weatherspoon Art Museum.
