Leah Williams

Genetic Counseling Program
Leah received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences and Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, then received a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling from the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 2008.

Upon graduation, Leah began working as a genetic counselor for Genetic Consultants of Maryland, serving prenatal, pediatric and cancer genetics patient populations. She managed six nation-wide offices of Genetic Centers for treatment and management of children with autism. Passionate about genetics education, Leah also continued her work in the creation of patient-facing materials in all three practice specialties.

In 2009, Leah transitioned to working as a laboratory genetic counselor at GeneDx, a large genetic testing laboratory based in Gaithersburg, MD with expertise in rare genetic disorders. She has expertise in cardiogenetic testing and is responsible for researching and interpretation of results, incorporation of clinical recommendations as well as report writing. Leah manages information for websites, advertisements and research, and proposes new genes to add to the GeneDx test menu. Her many talents and responsibilities are deeply rooted in passion for genetics education, leadership and increasing access to genetics services.

As she has developed herself as a leader and educator, Leah was motivated to find a way to give that back to the profession. In addition to contributing to the Cardiovascular and Industry Special Interest Groups for the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC), she took initiative in founding and chairing NSGC’s Leadership and Management Special Interest Group as well as serving on various other professional committees at the national level.
