The Department of Nutrition at UNCG has a very diverse group of graduate students. Below is a list of current students and a brief description of their interests. Students are grouped by areas of specialization (i.e. cellular and molecular nutrition, community nutrition and nutrition education, human/clinical nutrition, and master’s non-thesis option).   Students who are current MS/PhD students and Dietetic Interns are indicated by an asterisk.

Cellular and Molecular Nutrition

  • *Cherie Barnes
    Cherie received her BS degree in Biology/Chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University.  She is pursing her MS degree in Nutrition working alongside Dr. Steve Fordahl with a specialization in the interaction between diet and brain function and is also completing her dietetic internship.
  • *Dana DeSilva
    Dana received her BS degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from UNCG.  She is pursuing her PhD degree working with Dr. Ron Morrison and is also completing her dietetic internship.
  • Tianjiao Li
    Tianjiao received her BS degree in Preventive Medicine and MS degree in Nutrition and Food Hygiene from Harbin Medical University.  She is pursing her PhD degree working with Dr. Zhanxiang Zhou.
  • Matthew Pierce
    Matthew received his AAS degree in Culinary Arts from Guilford Technical Community College and BS degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  He is pursing his MS degree in Nutrition working with Dr. Keith Erikson.
  • Melissa Totten
    Melissa received her BS degree in chemistry from Ithaca College in NY, and her MS degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL.  After working in industry and academia for many years, Melissa has returned to college to work on her PhD in cellular/molecular nutrition with Dr. Keith Erikson.
  • Conner Wallace
    Conner received his BS degree in Nutrition and Foods – Dietetics at Appalachian State University. He is currently pursuing his PhD degree working alongside Dr. Steve Fordahl with a specialization in the interaction between diet and brain function.

Community Nutrition and Nutrition Education

  • Kendra Batten
    Kendra has a BA and MA in Psychology.  She is completing her doctorate with Dr. Lauren Haldeman.  Career and research interests include nutrition education and intervention development.
  • Victoria Hawk
    Victoria earned her BA degree in Economics and Computer Science from Wheaton College, and MPH degree in Nutrition from UNC Chapel Hill.  She is a Registered Dietitian pursuing her PhD degree working with Dr. Lauren Haldeman.
  • Alla Hill
    Alla received a BS in Nutrition and Foods with a concentration in Dietetics from Appalachian State University.  She is pursuing a PhD degree focused on community nutrition with mentorship by Dr. Jigna Dharod.
  • Grace Huebner
    Grace received her BS degree in Community and Medical Dietetics through Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI.  She completed her Dietetic Internship through her undergraduate schooling and has obtained her RDN credential.  She is currently pursuing her MS degree in Nutrition working with Dr. Jared McGuirt.
  • Sydeena Isaacs
    Sydeena received her BS degree in Foods and Nutrition and MS degree in Nutrition from Appalachian State University.  She is pursing her PhD degree working with Dr. Lenka Shriver.
  • Tina Irrer
    Tina received an AS in Culinary Arts from Johnson and Wales University and a BS in Applied Nutrition from North Carolina State University.  She is pursing her PhD degree working with Dr. Lauren Haldeman investigating paternal influences on child weight status.  She is also completing requirements for the dietetic internship.
  • Debora Nounkeu
    Debora received a Doctorate Degree in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Yaounde-Cameroon (Central Africa).  She is seeking her MS degree under the direction of Dr. Jigna Dharod.
  • Jovanna Orozco
    Jovanna received her BS degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from Winthrop University.  She is pursing her Masters degree working with Dr. Jigna Dharod involving food insecurity and infant feeding practices.
  • Lauren Paynter
    Lauren received her BSPH and MPH degrees in Biostatistics and her MPH/RD in Nutrition from UNC-Chapel Hill.  She is pursing her PhD degree working with Dr. Lenka Shriver.

Human/Clinical Nutrition

  • Jeanne Doherty
    Jeanne received her BA in Economics from Wake Forest University.  She is pursuing her MS degree in Nutrition and is working with Dr. Seth Armah, specializing in how diet influences inflammation.
  • Linda Friend
    Linda earned her BS degree in Botany from NC State and her MS degree in Nutrition from Meredith College.  She is pursuing her PhD working with Dr. Maryanne Perrin, and is investigating the impact of processing on nutrients and bioactive compounds in donor human milk.
  • Bruna Gutierrez dos Santos
    Bruna received her BS degree in Nutrition from Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo. She is pursuing her MS degree working with Dr. Maryanne Perrin.
  • Doreen Larvie
    Doreen received her BS degree in Dietetics from the University of Ghana.  She is pursing her MS degree working with Dr. Seth Armah with a focus in Human/Clinical nutrition.
  • Megan Lawless
    Meg received her BA degree in Health, Behavior and Society from the University of Rochester.  She is pursuing her Master’s degree working with Dr. Lenka Shriver.
  • Sydney McCune
    Sydney received her BS degree in Biology with a Minor in Chemistry from The University of North Carolina Wilmington.  She is pursuing her MS degree working with Dr. Maryanne Perrin.
  • *Hannah Schlotterer
    Hannah is pursuing her MS degree working with Dr. Maryanne Perrin on her thesis, which looks at the effects of storage and fortification on bioactive components of human milk.  She is also completing her dietetic internship.

Master’s Non-Thesis Option

The following students are enrolled in the MS program Non-Thesis (MSN) option:

  • Stephanie Falcon
    Stephanie received her BS in Mathematics from UNCG.  She is pursuing her MS in Nutrition.
  • Lauren Hooper
    Lauren received her BA degree in Exercise Science from UNC Chapel Hill.  She is pursuing her Master’s degree and plans to apply for a Dietetic Internship in the future.
  • Dee Horner
    Dee received her BS in Nutrition/Dietetics from UNCG.   She is hoping to complete a Dietetic Internship as part of her graduate studies, with the goal of becoming a RDN in a clinical pediatric setting.
  • Susan Morrill
    Susan received her BA degree in Art History from the University of Tennessee.  She is pursuing her MS degree in Nutrition and Dietetics with the goal to obtain her RDN credentials.
  • Michelle Polkowski
    Michelle received her BS in Dietetics from Michigan State University and is pursuing her MS in Nutrition.  She is a Registered Dietetic Technician and wishes to achieve her RD credential upon completion of all requirements and continue work in the clinical nutrition field.
  • Sarah Quirk
    Sarah received her BS degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Public Health from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  She is pursing her MS degree in Nutrition.
  • Andrew Ramsey
    Andrew received his BS degree in Nutrition/Dietetics from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is currently seeking his Masters in Nutrition and hopes to complete the Dietetic Internship and earn his RD credential in order to work in the field of eating disorders.
  • Jennifer Ritchie
    Jennifer received her BS degree in Elementary Education, from Appalachian State University.  She is pursuing her MS degree in Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Megan Rivenburg
    Megan received her BS in health and exercise science from Wake Forest University.  She is pursuing her MS in Nutrition.
  • Devonte Thomas
    Devonte received his BS degree in Exercise Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  He is pursuing his Masters in Nutrition.
  • Lauren Vincent
    Lauren received her BS degree in Nutrition with a concentration in Dietetics from UNCG.  She is pursing her MS degree.

Dietetic Interns

The following students are enrolled in the Dietetic Internship program:

  • Rachel Hunter
    Rachel completed her B.S. in Nutrition at UNCG in 2014.  After spending a few years working, she is now completing the Dietetic Internship at UNCG.
  • Andrew Jones
  • Ana Martinez
    Ana completed her BS degree in Nutrition Science from NC State University.  She is pursuing her MS in Family and Consumer Sciences at NC Central University and completing the Dietetic Internship at UNCG.
  • Keely Phillips
    Keely completed her BS degree in Exercise Science from Appalachian State University.  She received her MS in Nutrition from Meredith College and is now completing her dietetic internship at UNCG.
  • April Sansevieri
    April received her AAS in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University and her BS in Nutrition Sciences from NC State University.  She received her MS from UNCG and is now completing her internship with the intention  to become a RDN.
  • Nikki Short
    Nikki received her BS degree in Nutrition Science with an Applied Concentration at NC State University.  She recently received her MS degree in Nutrition Science at Meredith College and is currently a dietetic intern.
  • Leah Solomon
    Leah received her BS in Animal Science from NC State, her MS in Nutrition from Meredith College, and is currently a dietetic intern.
  • Katherine Southard
    Kate received her BS degree in Applied Nutrition Science from NC State.  She received her MS degree from UNCG and is now completing her dietetic internship.
  • Steven Veiga
    Steven completed his B.S. degree in Nutrition at UNCG.  He is now completing the dietetic internship under the mentorship of Professor Babbi Hawkins.
