Dr. Mathieu Despard presented a paper titled “COVID-19 Job and Income loss and Financial Distress: The Protective Role of Liquid Assets” at the 2021 American Council on Consumer Interests Annual Conference. At the conference, this paper was selected to receive the CFP Board ACCI Financial Planning Paper Award.

This study examined how having liquid assets made experiencing financial problems less likely to occur among a nationally representative sample of U.S. households that experienced a job or income loss due to COVID-19. This finding illuminates the need for public policies that help struggling families build emergency savings to cope with unexpected events
