On June 17, 2021 Senate Bill 475, The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, was passed and signed into law by President Joe Biden that now recognizes June 19th as a federal holiday.  June 19, 1865 was the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation which had freed all enslaved African Americans two and half years earlier.

This year Professor Christina Yongue, Department of Public Health Education, served at the Master of Ceremony for UNCG’s Inaugural Juneteenth Celebration. The event was held on Monday June 21st at the Elliot University Center and was attended by more that 150 students, faculty, and staff of UNCG.

This student led celebration was supported by UNCG Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, Student Government Associate, Graduate Student Association,  Chancellor’s Office, and Provost’s Office.
