Congratulations to Tynashia Whitaker who is the first UNC Greensboro CSD student to be accepted into the prestigious Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, launched at UNC Greensboro in 2017.

This program was originally established in 1989 as a way to diversify academia by increasing the number of underrepresented students who earn PhDs. Tynashia will receive a stipend and participate in the McNair Summer Research Institute.

Additionally, Tynashia will receive faculty mentoring from Dr. Robert Mayo and participate in a summer course on research and writing. Tynashia is from Tarboro North Carolina and plans on applying for admission to master’s programs in speech-language pathology in 2022.

She plans on focusing her research on understanding the linguistic characteristics of African American English so that speech language pathologist become more aware of how the stereotyping and stigmatization may result in misdiagnosis of African American children as having speech sound disorders.
